What is CEFR?

CEFR” or the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” is a language proficiency assessment standard originally used by the Council of Europe in the “Language Learning for European Citizenship” project from 1989 to 1996. Its primary goal was to evaluate language teaching and learning in institutions across Europe. In 2001, the Council of the European Union adopted the CEFR as a standard for assessing language proficiency.

The CEFR framework categorizes language proficiency into three broad levels, each further divided into sublevels, resulting in a total of six levels as follows:
